Does running a Bitcoin and Lightning node at home attract hackers? Why is security through obscurity not the best strategy? What is some general advice on securing your personal computer and home network? Are there full node starter kits? Could bitcoin nodes be cut off if ISPs blocked port 8333? How do nodes connect to each other? How could you route around censorship? Will Bitcoin evolve into a more stealthy and anonymous protocol? Creating a Local Bitcoin Testnet / Regtest - Programming Bitcoin

23:20
UPDATE: a few specifics have changed, see below for up-to-date commands In this video we create a local bitcoin testnet within a docker container. Then we'll connect to our testnet from Bitcoin-Qt on our desktop (host) machine. Here's the docker box we're going to use: https://github.com/freewil/bitcoin-testnet-box Essentially, run: docker pull freewil/bitcoin-testnet-box docker run -t -i --name bitcoind -P -p 49020:19000 freewil/bitcoin-testnet-box make start Now we'll have a local testnet we can use for test transactions. Tips: 1FfxymRtVTJbqtFg5ZK9p16mABVFCjqg6J ------------------ It's been a few years since I recorded this and the commands for `freewil/bitcoin-testnet-box` have changed. * Checkout https://github.com/freewil/bitcoin-testnet-box for the latest instructions on how to run that Docker box. * Make sure you expose port 19000, too: `docker run -t -i -p 19000:19000 -p 19001:19001 -p 19011:19011 freewil/bitcoin-testnet-box` * Instead of using bitcoind at 9:31, use: `bitcoin-cli -datadir=1 stop` * To tail the log run: `tail -f 1/regtest/debug.log` * To run BitcoinQT: `/Applications/Bitcoin-Qt.app/Contents/MacOS/Bitcoin-Qt -regtest -dnsseed=0 -connect=0.0.0.0:19000 -datadir=./localnet/ -splash=0` - note the different port and using regtest instead of testnet mode * Now use bitcoin-cli for most functions instead of bitcoind * E.g. `bitcoin-cli -datadir=1 listaccounts` Show less

Bitcoin Q&A: What is the role of nodes?

08:17
The role that full nodes play in security of the network. People focus a lot on mining, which has a fundamental role in the network but is not necessarily the most interesting feature of the constellation of technologies involved. The Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) is the most essential protocol underlying the world's routing system, and you use it every single day without knowing it, just as you are oblivious to the vast filtration system allowing you to drink clean water from a fountain. A node is a computer that is participating the global peer-to-peer Bitcoin network. They propagate transactions and blocks everywhere. Full nodes act independently as authoritative verifiers. Onion routing. Double-spending protection. Levels of isolation for untrustworthy nodes. Why would you run one? To be in control of your money - your keys, your money. You don't trust anyone else to tell you what the truth is, you cross-check every claim yourself. Be part of the revolution in money. This is part of a talk which took place at the JW Marriott Sahar (International Airport) on March 26th 2017 in Mumbai, India: https://www.townscript.com/e/bitcoin-talk-by-the-world-famous-andreas-antonopoulos-203132 RELATED: Lightning, full nodes, and miners - https://youtu.be/dlJG4OHdJzs Hard Promises, Soft Promises: Promoting Autonomy instead of Authority https://youtu.be/UJSdMFPjW8c Innovations in wallet design - https://youtu.be/K5Ei3_D8LQ8 How to get people to care about security - https://youtu.be/Ji1lS9NMz1E Andreas M. LEDGER NANO S:

Setting up a Bitcoin Full Node in an iocage jail on FreeNAS

04:19
Create a jail named 'BitcoinFullNode' and log into it (replace lagg0 with your main network interface. You might need to replace 11.1 with 11.2 in a few months): root@freenas # iocage create -n BitcoinFullNode -r 11.1-RELEASE boot=on ip4_addr="lagg0|10.0.0.15/24" && iocage console BitcoinFullNode Install bitcoin-daemon: root@freenas # env ASSUME_ALWAYS_YES=YES pkg bootstrap && pkg update && pkg upgrade -y && pkg install -y bitcoin-daemon Run bitcoin-daemon as user 'bitcoin' at jail startup: root@freenas # crontab -u bitcoin -e @reboot /usr/local/bin/bitcoind –daemon *Forward port 8333 TCP to your Bitcoin Full Node IP address.* Be patient, your node is going to take a while (depending on your internet connection speed) to sync with the consensus block. After that, it will begin to accept requests from its peers. Keep in mind that the whole jail needs around 180GB of storage space. Consider joining Bitnodes: https://bitnodes.earn.com/ It handily notifies you by e-mail when your node goes online or offline. My advice is to run a bitcoin node only if you have spare bandwidth and are online 24/7.

Video Tutorial How to make your own bitcoin litecoin dogecoin mining pool 1/3-wallet configuration

07:08
If you like my videos please consider donating BTC to 1GvWrJSLNafra26jDwpScY5bqYcQ6BDhPW Hi again guys, In this video I'm doing something a bit different. This will be a 3 part series on building your own bitcoin mining pool using open source software for fun and for profit. I am using VMWare Workstation 10 running Ubuntu 14.04 - any linux distribution will work however. The network is in bridged mode and for this to work so that outside clients can connect you will nee to forward your ports on your router appropriately or rent a virtual private server I am using the cryptocoin: guncoin as an example in this build but you can use any coin you like. The reason I went with guncoin is that I'm on a limited time schedule and my internet connection is quite slow so downloading the entire litecoin blockchain would have been a hindrance to me. Part 1: Building and compiling the wallet Part 2: Building and configuring the stratum server Part 3: Building and configuring the Web Front End and final testing Dependencies you will need (run these commands in this order before you start to make sure everything will work as expected): sudo apt-get install git screen watch sudo apt-get install build-essential libboost-all-dev libcurl4-openssl-dev libdb5.1-dev libdb5.1++-dev mysql-server sudo apt-get install python-twisted python-mysqldb python-dev python-setuptools python-memcache python-simplejson python-pylibmc sudo easy_install -U distribute sudo apt-get install memcached php5-memcached php5-mysqlnd php5-curl php5-json libapache2-mod-php5 sudo apache2ctl -k stop; sleep 2; sudo apache2ctl -k start

How To Create Your Own Node - Vertcoin One-Click Miner

a short tutorial on how to create your own node using the vertcoin one click miner program. special thanks to jason helms for the info and support. MrSotko's Vertcoin Node - feel free to come mine! stratum+tcp://68.2.68.143:9181 Sign up with coinbase. buy or sell 100 dollars in crypto currency and get 10 dollars of bitcoin for free with this link to coinbase. https://www.coinbase.com/join/59ab37900671d100b3c25cc5 Want to donate to the channel? Donate bitcoin and send me an email saying how much you sent and I'll try to thank you at the end of the next video! Bitcoin Address: 144vfND4SGhYxyjAWKHBETGncuwdYKmoyG mrsotko@gmail.com step by step. 1. download vertcoin one click miner and install it 2. download vertcoin core wallet, extract it to a folder, run it, and let it sync. (takes a long time) 3. port forward all ports as shown in the video using your router. 4. set up a static ip as shown in the video. if you have a wifi adapter next to your ethernet adapter make sure you right click on it and click disable. if you only have wifi then make sure you disable the ethernet adapter. its best to use ethernet (a cable) wifi is much slower. 5. set up the settings of the programs as shown in the video. make sure your settings are the same. (do not use the same wallet address as what was shown in the video!! otherwise you will be mining for me...dont do that, its a nice gesture though) 6. with your core wallet fully synced and vertcoin one click miner open at the same time click on "run local node" on the one click miner program. it will ask you to create a config file. click ok. the node will try to start now, but it will likely not work yet. close the node command that opened. will we open it again in a moment. 7. go to the vertcoin folder as shown in the video. in users - your name - app data - roaming - vertcoin. find the config file as shown in the video and copy it to the folder that you extracted your vertcoin wallet into. 8. now with your core wallet open and vertcoinminer open. you should be able to click run node and it will work. you will see a command prompt open up and lots of text and information scrolling through it. 9. when you click run node it will ask for your wallet address which is the wallet you will mine to. put that information in. the password field can be anything. i just make my password as X. it doesnt matter. 10. with your node running you will see it as a minable node now on the front of your program. you can check to see if its working by clicking on the node you just made. it will bring up a webpage, there will be no miners yet unless you already began mining by hitting the start button. you know the node is working if the webpage that is brought up when you click on it works. if its not, the webpage will be blank and give an error. 11. your node will take a while to show up on the public scanner. possibly a day or less. eventually people will show up on your node pickaxes in hand to mine! 12. last step, sit back, enjoy success...you did it. you're the best there ever was. how awesome is it to be you? the world may never know. for the rest of us..eat this crunchy groove! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9fWxCIi5PIw Make the config file server=1 server=1 rpcallowip=127.0.0.1 rpcuser=VhLDUtBqEAdxk2VNiiQL1ue6q rpcpassword=h4C2iyWzDuCSg2tpBpMkLRk7o rpcport=5888 the safest way to store bitcoin and claim bitcoin forks https://www.ledgerwallet.com/r/554d Trade almost all alt coins here at cryptopia https://www.cryptopia.co.nz/Register?referrer=mrsotko

Register free here http://textdailypay.com/hu7h text or call 909 740-4675 Bitcoin mining is intentionally designed to be resource-intensive and difficult so that the number of blocks found each day by miners remains steady. Individual blocks must contain a proof of work to be considered valid. This proof of work is verified by other Bitcoin nodes each time they receive a block. Bitcoin uses the hashcash proof-of-work function. The primary purpose of mining is to allow Bitcoin nodes to reach a secure, tamper-resistant consensus. Mining is also the mechanism used to introduce Bitcoins into the system: Miners are paid any transaction fees as well as a "subsidy" of newly created coins. This both serves the purpose of disseminating new coins in a decentralized manner as well as motivating people to provide security for the system. Bitcoin mining is so called because it resembles the mining of other commodities: it requires exertion and it slowly makes new currency available at a rate that resembles the rate at which commodities like gold are mined from the ground. What is Proof of Work? A proof of work is a piece of data which was difficult (costly, time-consuming) to produce so as to satisfy certain requirements. It must be trivial to check whether data satisfies said requirements. Producing a proof of work can be a random process with low probability, so that a lot of trial and error is required on average before a valid proof of work is generated. Bitcoin uses the Hashcash proof of work. What is Bitcoin Mining Difficulty? The Computationally-Difficult Problem Bitcoin mining a block is difficult because the SHA-256 hash of a block's header must be lower than or equal to the target in order for the block to be accepted by the network. This problem can be simplified for explanation purposes: The hash of a block must start with a certain number of zeros. The probability of calculating a hash that starts with many zeros is very low, therefore many attempts must be made. In order to generate a new hash each round, a nonce is incremented. See Proof of work for more information. The Bitcoin Network Difficulty Metric The Bitcoin mining network difficulty is the measure of how difficult it is to find a new block compared to the easiest it can ever be. It is recalculated every 2016 blocks to a value such that the previous 2016 blocks would have been generated in exactly two weeks had everyone been mining at this difficulty. This will yield, on average, one block every ten minutes. As more miners join, the rate of block creation will go up. As the rate of block generation goes up, the difficulty rises to compensate which will push the rate of block creation back down. Any blocks released by malicious miners that do not meet the required difficulty target will simply be rejected by everyone on the network and thus will be worthless. The Block Reward When a block is discovered, the discoverer may award themselves a certain number of bitcoins, which is agreed-upon by everyone in the network. Currently this bounty is 25 bitcoins; this value will halve every 210,000 blocks. See Controlled Currency Supply. Additionally, the miner is awarded the fees paid by users sending transactions. The fee is an incentive for the miner to include the transaction in their block. In the future, as the number of new bitcoins miners are allowed to create in each block dwindles, the fees will make up a much more important percentage of mining income. How to Install Latest PIECOIN Wallet - add Active Nodes, Setup Security and Backup

06:37
Get your wallet at the Piecoin.info site. (Don't use the .tech or .net site, these are old dev sites and outdated.) http://www.piecoin.info/ (Note: Ideally you want to get your wallet up and synced before you try to transfer coins to it.) Get your active nodes here: http://www.piecoin.info/active-node/ Verify port 31415 is open on: http://www.yougetsignal.com/tools/open-ports/ For Macs: You'll have to open the console and add each active node one at a time with the command "addnode 82.165.162.27 add" (Minus quotes, just change the IP address with the active node lists on the site. Also check the port above, mac users have this issue a lot too. If closed look up your specific router model and google how to port forward this port to your computer. Found this useful? Lightning Talk: Eclipse Attacks on Bitcoin’s Peer-to-Peer Network

00:56
We present eclipse attacks on bitcoin's peer-to-peer network. Our attack allows an adversary controlling a sufficient number of IP addresses to monopolize all connections to and from a victim bitcoin node. The attacker can then exploit the victim for attacks on bitcoin's mining and consensus system, including N-confirmation double spending, selfish mining, and adversarial forks in the blockchain. We take a detailed look at bitcoin’s peer-to-peer network, and quantify the resources involved in our attack via probabilistic analysis, Monte Carlo simulations, measurements and experiments with live bitcoin nodes. Finally, we present countermeasures, inspired by botnet architectures, that are designed to raise the bar for eclipse attacks while preserving the openness and decentralization of bitcoin’s current network architecture.

2 How to create a local private multi-node Ethereum network (geth console) - Ethereum from scratch:

44:42
Part two of my hands on tutorial series on Ethereum. In the first video we installed Geth - in this one we actually get our hands dirty and start using it. We are just creating a private local ethereal network - with two nodes - I show how to initialise a new blockchain from a sample genesis block, how to start the javascript console and some basic commands to get you started. I start a miner, show the block height increasing and that the blockchain is being communicated across both separate nodes. This is intended to be a very hands on tutorial so please follow along. ______________________________________________________________ Here is the script from the session. NOTE angle brackets i.e. the GREATER THAN SYMBOL are not allowed in the description so I've replaced with &gt - you need to replace with the GREATER THAN symbol when running the command 0. Set up the environment cd ~ mkdir ethereum echo 'export ethereum_home=/Users/mattthomas/ethereum' (double right arrow) ~/.bash_profile ~/.bash_profile cd ethereum vi $ethereum_home/genesis.json (pasre this with cmd v in edit mode) { "nonce": "0x0000000000000042", "timestamp": "0x0", "parentHash": "0x0000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000", "extraData": "0x0", "gasLimit": "0x8000000", "difficulty": "0x400", "mixhash": "0x0000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000", "coinbase": "0x3333333333333333333333333333333333333333", "alloc": { } } Save with esc !wq 1. initialise the block geth --datadir "$ethereum_home/youtube1" init "$ethereum_home/genesis.json" 2. start the console geth --datadir "$ethereum_home/chain5" console 2 &gt console.log 3.create a 2nd node geth --datadir "$ethereum_home/youtube1-a" init "$ethereum_home/genesis.json" 4.
